The Challenge
The site is located in rural Southampton previously known as Bargain Farm, the client Bargate Homes had proposed a housing development, upon further investigation of the site it was decided that traditional foundations wouldn’t be suitable due to poor ground make-up.
Bargate Homes approached Franki Foundations to pro-vide a bespoke & comprehensive design consisting of both structural & geotechnical aspects. This was to consist of a solution that provided a complete piled foundation that would be ready for floor finishes and construction in both timely and a cost-effective manner.
The Franki Solution
The solution to the project was to provide Franki Foundations first ever large-scale Rapid Deck foundation, a piled raft system that makes piling seem like the easiest foundation option.
This consists of a lightweight raft design using finite element analysis, to produce an economic design in terms of both thickness & steel requirements. The speed and efficiency of this system allowed the entirety of these foundation works (consisting of 23 plots & a total area of 1400m2) to be installed in a 14 weeks programme. This far exceeded the expected programme and made significant savings on construction time.
Advantages to the solution at Walnut Place : reduced excavation, minimal additional sub-structure work and construction can begin 7 days after slab is poured.
